Our company launch on 3rd September 2006, sponsoring a four man, two car team (DS Motorsport UK Ltd. VW Golf GTi MK2 and Caterham 7) on the Student Gumball Rally 2006 was a great success.

Now a year later, the Student Gumball Rally is back a week early, being given the green light for the 24th August, but with a different name, Student Brake Away 2007.

For the past month D.S.M.U.K. has been working on last year’s Team FCUK’D vehicle, a 1976 Ford Cortina mk3 in preparation for the S.B. 2007. They were runner up for spirit of the Gumball and I’m sure if you attended the event were probably towed /rescued by the vehicle. Unfortunately, the gearbox played havoc and ended the Tina’s trip.

This year, the Classic Ford is back with a Big Heart. The vehicle now has a 2.9 V6 Cosworth lump fitted, originally from an early Granada Cosworth, but taken from a donor mk5 Cortina. The Engine Bay has had a seven stage rust treatment and full re-spray prior to installation. The rear axle and suspension arms have also been re-sprayed.

With regards to the engine fit and mounting, only a small modification to the heater box was required to take the V6. The engine mount positions and brackets from mk5 Cortina are the same as standard mk3 Cortina’s. However, the conversion from original Granada might have had different engine mounts and Brackets. The engine loom from Cosworth needs mating to the standard mk3 Cortina vehicle loom with a few modifications. Due to lack of space under the bonnet the battery is mounted in the boot, along with the fuel pump.

Performance upgrades to account for extra power, torque and weight include: Custom Chrome Stainless Steel Exhaust System, 18 row Mocal oil cooler, Custom Made Radiator, K&N Induction Kit, FSE Fuel Pressure Regulator, Powerflex Bushes all round, Spax Adjustable Dampers, Wilwood 4 pot Brake Kit, mk5 Cortina brake servo and master cylinder, Re-routed brake lines to rear T-piece split to either rear drum (original setup routed directly from master cylinder trough rear n/s wheel cylinder, then over to rear o/s wheel cylinder). 15 inch Zetec S alloys.

The combination of the above modifications has transformed the Tina from its original specification, giving a new positive driving feel, with a burbling Cosworth V6 under the right foot.

We wish Dave and his team the best of luck for the trip and hope they bring home the Spirit of the gumball, oh and of course the Tina.

All the work has been carried out by DS Motorsport UK ltd. at our Workshop in Bedworth, West Midlands. For more information on the conversion, please do not hesitate to give us a call, or send us an e-mail.
